Staying grounded as a Holistic Therapist
As a holistic therapist, our role is to hold space for deep healing and transformation, but this sacred and rewarding work can leave us feeling drained, scattered, or emotionally burdened if we're not tending to our own mental and energetic wellbeing.
To be able to continue offering heart-centered care without burning out, it’s essential to ground ourselves regularly and act from a place of inner alignment. Here in this blog post I would like to offer my practices that help me stay rooted, present, and nourished, so I can serve others from a full cup. May everything I have got to offer on all my platforms serve your highest good and the highest good of all🙏🏼
ꙮBegin each day with a grounding ritual
Grounding doesn’t have to be elaborate and overmistified. It's a simple morning practice that can shift and tune our nervous system for the tasks ahead and help us anchor into our body and energy field.
Standing barefoot on the earth or ground and visualizing roots growing from your feet,
Doing a few Sun Salutations if you are familiar with that yoga sequence
Practicing a few rounds of conscious breathwork (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6)
Drinking a warm herbal tea slowly and mindfully, connecting to its aroma and temperature and maybe even speak our intentions into it… …so whatever our daily ritual looks like matching our mood and circumstances on that given day, it helps reset our energetic baseline, especially before stepping into client work.
ꙮSet Clear Energetic Boundaries
Many holistic therapists are naturally empathic and tend to absorb others’ emotions. You know, to prevent that energetic entanglement,
Grounding is always a great start,
Visualize a golden light or protective bubble around us before each session,
Affirmations like, “I allow only what serves my highest good to enter my field” , as our job as therapists is not to absorb other people’s emotions, but holding a safe space for them so they can deal with them. The same applies the other way around- our grounding is essential to keep us in alignment and be able to serve from that place.
If grounding crystals are something we like to engage with, hematite or black tourmaline are great to hold or keep nearby as a tangible channel to release anything that's not ours
Clear boundaries help us stay centered in our own frequency rather than being pulled into the emotional tides of our clients. This is how we can effectively help them.
ꙮAct from the heart space, not the head
You always hear me speaking about this, but yes, I cannot highlight it enough that the heart is our intuitive compass, it knows when to speak, when to listen, and when to pause. Before entering a session or responding to a situation
Take a moment to breathe into your heart space and ask yourself, “What does love invite me to do right now?” Notice how your body responds, as true heart-led action often feels calm, clear, and grounded, it's a sensed intuition… This simple, but meaningful practice fosters deeper connection with clients, while also honouring our own inner guidance, which is absolutely beautiful.
ꙮCleanse and reset after client sessions
Take time to discharge and reset in between clients… just like you finish one chapter in a book and you know that it is done and the next one starts on a completely new page.
I love using the visual while washing hands before and after a massage. It signifies how I enter that person’s space, getting my heart and hands ready to clean away anything that is not for the highest good of the client and then I completely leave it- washing away anything that is not mine to carry.
Visualizing a waterfall of white light washing over us, clearing residual energy is also a great way to release what is not ours with intention.
We can shake out the body or stretch to release any held tension, sometimes that is the best way to release.
Use sound (singing bowls, chimes, or humming - that activates the vagus nerve) to shift energy if that's what calls or resonates the most with you.
Any form of intentional cleansing regularly prevents that emotional buildup and supports our long-term mental health and that's the whole point of it, to remain mindful of ourselves as that is what we are teaching to clients too, right?
ꙮNurture ourselves with the same compassion we offer our clients
Yes, this is a contestant reminder for myself too, I saved an evening reminder in my phone calendar for it, as we deserve our own medicine. At the end of the day, checking in with ourselves and asking what we need, acknowledge what we have given, what we want to do differently next time, it is all relevant and human. We definitely need to make time for what replenishes us: nature walks, journaling, any form of creative expression, or simply stillness. Our healing presence begins with how we care for ourselves.
Being a grounded, heart-centered holistic therapist is never about perfection, it's always about presence. By creating steady rituals that work for us, clearing space for ourselves, and listening to our heart, we create a strong foundation for both our personal wellbeing and the healing journeys we guide others through.
P.S.: Please, please remember always, that your energy is your instrument. Keep it tuned, loved, and respected.
